Keep Fido Safe and Calm on the Fourth

The Fourth of July is Fido’s least favorite day of the year. Fireworks mean that more pets go missing during the Fourth of July weekend than any other time of the year. After you double-check that your pet’s microchip information is up-to-date, here are some more ways you can keep your pets safe and calm during a stressful time.

For humans, the Fourth of July is a day full of barbeques, pool parties and patriotic fun, but for many dogs, the holiday is downright terrifying. The culprit? Fireworks. The loud noises and flashing lights can send dogs into a state of intense anxiety, which can lead to panting, pacing, destructive behavior, and, in some cases, even running away. In fact, according to pet microship provider HomeAgain, more pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year. Here are some tips and products for keeping Fido safe and calm.

Tire out on a long walk.

Before you head to that neighbor’s backyard BBQ, take Fido on a long walk around the blog. An extra-long walk in the afternoon will (hopefully) help your pup feel tired enough to lay down and nap.

Secure the house.

Make sure all doors and windows are shut. Draw the curtains, if possible, to block out the lights from flashlights and sparklers.

Create a safe space for your dog.

This could be your dog’s crate, a pile of pillows on the living room floor, etc. Make sure Fido’s water bowl is filled. Put on calming music or the Animal Planet on TV to distract your pup and drown out outside noise.
