From Frail to Flourishing: The Inspiring Journey of Two Tacoma Dogs

On a cold November day, Dewey arrived at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County (HSTPC) dangerously hypothermic, and suffering from severely swollen, untreated bite wounds. Dewey and Thomas arrived to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County only a month apart, both emaciated and in desperate need of help.

He was so emaciated that his skin strained against every one of his protruding bones, and when you looked into his sunken eyes, you couldn’t help but feel the weight of the sadness.

Exactly one month later, it happened again.

A kind community member found Thomas trembling on her front porch, at death’s door. Just like Dewey, Thomas was hypothermic, emaciated, and suffering from infected wounds. The exhausted pup was so weak he could hardly lift his head.

Unfortunately, starving and injured pets arrive at HSTPC every week desperate for immediate medical attention. The shelter, founded in 1888, is one of the highest animal-intake facilities in Washington State. With the overwhelming summer months right around the corner, they are expecting thousands more vulnerable pets will soon arrive into their care.

For pets like Dewey and Thomas, your kindness means the world.

Please support HSTPC’s Summer Fund Drive with a donation today to help them prepare for their busiest, most resource-draining time of year.

Dewey and Thomas came to HSTPC in just the nick of time. The shelter’s expert veterinary team raised the dogs’ temperatures with warm blankets, drained and cleaned their painful wounds, provided hydrating fluids, and placed them on feeding plans to help them safely gain weight.

After several weeks in their care, both dogs gradually gained enough strength to show their affectionate, playful personalities. It was clear to the entire team at HSTPC that the most important thing Thomas and Dewey had been missing was love.

“Dewey is such a sweet and loving dog, despite everything he went through,” Dewey’s adopter said. “I can’t express how thankful I am that we are the family that can give him all the love, attention, and treats he deserves.”

Your donation to HSTPC’s Summer Fund Drive puts resources and tools directly in the hands of the shelter’s veterinary team, helping them provide the care these pets need to thrive and prosper. Please make your gift today to give thousands of deserving pets a better tomorrow.

Will you donate to the Summer Fund Drive and help save even more lives like Dewey and Thomas?
